Wow, we have received quite a few applications – about 25 or 30 so far, and more coming in every day. Here is a short progress report.

Most, unfortunately, are not CFPs (or even close). Even though some seem to have a real passion for financial planning, we are looking for a qualifications and a much higher knowledge level.

A few are existing financial planners. Some of these seem to be very sales-focused, which is unfortunately the experience most financial planners have. However, sales skills are not a skill we need.

There are some that seem to understand how unique this position is, being a pure planning position. He or she would be able to focus on their professional skills and making a difference in people’s lives.

For most financial planners, if you ask them how much of their time is spent actually doing financial planning vs. investment sales vs. prospecting/marketing, if they are honest they will admit that at least 95% of their time is spent in the last 2. This position is an “escape” from what most financial planners must do to earn a living.

Financial planners tend to be an independent lot. They tend to cling to the value of the business they build over their career. When they retire, they usually sell off their client base. What they tend not to understand is that the normal amounts you can get for selling a client base are relatively small – far smaller than the value of a portion of an active planning practice.

We are looking for a unique individual with high integrity, intelligence, people skills and passion for financial planning – in addition to having a CFP. Unfortunately, most of the unique individuals among our applications are in the non-CFP group.

In short, even though we have quite a few applications, if you think you are right for this position, it is still open.

We are keeping it open for a few more days before we start doing interviews.

The pay does look pretty good for starting, however I don’t have a CFP. Maybe something I could look into some day.
